"Pesta Sukan" is a Malay phrase for Festival of Sports. The festival was aimed at providing an opportunity for sportsmen and women to get together in camaraderie and goodwill and to raise the standard of sports through friendly competition.
The Singapore Bowling family mourns the loss of a great mentor and coach whose legacy is evident in the many bowlers and coaches who have benefitted from his coaching and friendship. It is with great sadness that we discovered the passing of a stalwart coach and senior bowler Denny Koh or Uncle Denny as many bowlers and coaches affectionately called him.
Coach Denny was appointed as a coach for the National Development Squad (2003 – 2004) and was a National Youth Development coach from 2007-2010.
He was an avid bowler, even in his senior years. He was the 1st runner up in the Senior Masters division of the 44th Singapore National Bowling Championship. He was also the Champion in the Men’s Senior division for both the 35th and 40th Singapore International Open Championships. He had even indicated his interest to represent Singapore at the Asian Seniors Championships to be held later this year.
Our deepest condolences to his family. Rest in Peace Uncle Denny!

IN PRAISE OF THE TEAM BEHIND OUR U21 WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS TEAM
The 4 Gold and 1 Bronze harvested at the IBF U21 World Championships in Sweden in June 2022 was Singapore’s best-ever achievement in this prestigious tournament. While numerous accolades have been bestowed upon our youth bowling stars their coaches should certainly enjoy a share in the praises as it is only through their years of effort and dedication to nurture these athletes that such stellar results can be obtained.
SBF President, Dr Valerie Teo remarked “I believe a shout-out is certainly called for to the people behind the U21 World Championships team for without all of you, their remarkable achievements would not have been possible. A big Thank You to the parents, loved ones and most importantly the COE coaches and mentors who played such important roles in grooming them and providing them such a strong foundation. To Helmi and Vincent (national coaches) we are really grateful to you guys for pulling this young team together and sharpening their skills. It was incredible to experience and watch them in action together and we are looking forward to so much more.”
Head Coach, Helmi Chew had this to say – “We are so proud of all of them for winning glory for Singapore. It has been such a great honour and privilege to be able to coach the U21 World Championships team. Credit must be given to the Centres of Excellence (COE) and their coaches who were responsible for developing their bowling talent and giving these bowlers a solid foundation to build their championship game on, namely Agape, Bowling Is Science, Serangoon Gardens Country Club, Singapore Sports School, Strike and Trinity.”
National Senior Assistant Coach, Vincent Lim commented “The camaraderie and fighting spirit displayed by every member of our U21 World Championships team was special and something which we celebrate every bit as much as every medal won. My hope is that the experience and lessons learnt from this tournament will encourage them to work even harder to achieve more success. The sky’s the limit for them. On a personal level, the success of our bowlers gives my SBF coaching colleagues and I great satisfaction and encouragement as it proves that our coaching philosophy and methods have been effective.”
Behind every winning team is another winning team. Kudos to them all!
