Ten Singaporeans make Round 2
27th May, K.Lumpur: Guangzhou Asian Games gold medalists, Geraldine Ng, Shayna Ng and Jazreel Tan led four other team-mates into Women's Open Round 2 finals of the 34th Canon Malaysian International Open while Ng Tiac Pin led two other men through.
Geraldine totaled 1625 to tie with Jazreel Tan while Bernice finished sixth, just 11 pins behind her team-mates. Fok Ka Wai also made the next round after she rolled 1599 for seventh position.
Despite taking up 14th position, Kristel Oh also advanced by finishing in the top 21. Tan Yan Ling just managed to edge ex-national, Yap Seok Kim by 4 pins to occupy the final 21st position.
Two remaining Singaporean finalists, Oriana Tay and Ilma Nur Jannah missed the cut after managing only 23rd and 27th positions respectively.
The top 21 will be joined by the top 3 local and top 3 overseas seeded qualifiers for tomorrow's Round 2 finals for another 8 games. Jasmine Yeong-Nathan qualified as third seeded overseas women. The top 6 will proceed to the stepladder finals.
Meanwhile, Singapore men also impressed with Ng Taic Pin leading his team-mates, Jevarn Li and Jason Yeong-Nathan into the second round. Ng finished a splendid fifth spot with 1682 as Thailand's Yannaphon Larpapharat led the round with 1735.
Ng had only made the finals after finishing second in the desperado squad late last night. Ng Chiew Pang, Remy Ong and Brandon Lee failed to qualify.
Defending champion, Adrian Ang took second spot with 1721 while ex-national, Benjamin Hong did well to take up third spot with 1690. Jevarn totaled 1633 to finish eighth while Jason squeezed into the next round in 23rd position.
The top 25 will be joined by the top 4 local and top 4 overseas seeded qualifiers in the Round 2 finals on May 28 during which the top 6 finishers will proceed to the stepladder finals.
