Strong Team performance by Singapore

29th July, Helsinki: Following a superb showing in the doubles event by Daphne Tan, New Hui Fen, Shayna Ng and Jazreel Tan, the quartet teamed up to finish a strong second in the World Youth Championship Team of Four event after the first block.  Fresh from winning the Girl's Doubles silver and bronze medals. Daphne Tan, New Hui Fen, Shayna Ng and Jazreel Tan followed it up on the first block of the team event with a splendid opening game of 838 to trail England by 4 pins.

The quartet shot another good 810 but had to content with second to Team USA, who shot to the front and leading Singapore by a massive 56 pins ahead of Malaysia in third.

As USA fumbled in their third game, Singapore was unable to take advantage and ended the block with 817 to remain in second as Malaysia stormed home with a sizzling 861 to finish in pole position.

Daphne totaled 585, Hui Fen 545, Shayna Ng 686 and Jazreel 649 for a team total of 2465, just 3 pins shy of the Malaysians on 2468. USA slipped to third with 2460.Meanwhile, the boys finished a strong third to Squad 2 and overall leader, USA with 2468. Justin Lim Chun Liang, Benjamin Lim, Justin Lim Chia Loong and Basil Low had trailed the Americans in second before the third game but managed only 772 in their final game.

The foursome shot 870 and 826 in their first two games but ran out of steam towards the end. Chun Liang posted 575, Benjamin 648, Chia Loong 656 and Basil 589. USA topped the block with 2530.

Squad 1 leader, Korea settled for second with 2517 and France too third spot with 2473. Australia, who was second to the Koreans finished fourth with 2471, just 3 pins ahead of the Singaporeans.

 

The totals of the first five teams are indeed very close and another good performance in the second block could put Singapore into the knockout semi-finals.

Jazreel Tan and Shayna Ng are in a good position to advance to the Masters finals after finishing fifth and seventh in the All Events with 3182 and 3166 respectively. Daphne Tan is in 18th position, 18 pins off 16th place. Hui Fen finished 27th.

Only Banjamin Lim in among the top 16 in 11th with 3205 in the Boy's All Events standings. Basil Low finished 34th, Chia Loong 49th and Chun Liang 69th.

The second block will resume on Friday, July 30 and the top 4 teams will advance to the one-game shootout. The top 16 girls and top 16 boys will advance to the Masters elimination rounds on Saturday, August 1.
