Singaporeans make impact

19th September, Jakarta: Singapore national bowlers competing at the 11th Indonesia International Open underway at the newly refurbished Jaya Ancol Bowling Centre made an impact in the qualifying rounds on Thursday.

Heading the challenge was 2011 DHC-IBC Champion, Cherie Tan after the Singaporean moved into second spot if the Women’s Open Masters overseas qualifying table with an impressive 6-game aggregate total of 1372.

Cherie is sandwiched by two Korean professional debutants, Han Sol, who topped the table with 1385 and her compatriot, Park Jin Hee third behind Cherie with 1359. The top 3 qualifiers earned a bye to advance automatically into Stage 2 finals.

Asian Indoor Games gold medalist, Daphne Tan missed the top 3 spots to finished fourth in the table with 1320 joined by Amanda Ng sixth with 1300.

World Games fifth-placed, Geraldine Ng and Tay Hui Wen took up seveth and eighth positions with 1284 and 1275 respectively. Nur Dyana occupied third in the mixed pool with 1252 followed by Jasmine Yeong-Nathan in fifth with 1226.

 

National development squad member, Joy Yap is third in the reserves and with another day of qualifying left, there is a strong chance she could join her team-mates and only need to improve her lowest 3-game series of 567.

2010 Asian Games Team silver medlaist, Novie Phang topped the local pool with 1467 followed by defending champion, Sharon Limansantoso in second with 1412 and Ivana Hie third with 1352. The top 3 local qualifier will also earn a bye into Stage 2 finals.

In the Men’s Open division, Suresh Elangovan headed the list of Singapore men after he finished fifth with 1473. Muhd Danial Zheng Yi took up 10th in the overseas pool with 1444. Noor Afizal Azizan topped the pool with a stunning 1577 from two series of 799 and 778.

Three-time Indonesia Open champion, Alex Liew finished second with 1512 followed by Eric Tseng of Hong Kong, who rolled the tournament’s third perfect game, with 1499.

Asian Youth Doubles gold and two silver medalist, Diwan Rizaldy topped the local with 1478 with two superb 3-games series 729 and 713. Embes and Hardy Rachmadian, who rolled the fourth 300, took up second and third with 1461 and 1259 respectively.

The top 30 men and top 24 women will contest the 10-game Stage 1 finals on Septmber 21. The top 18 men plus the six seeded qualifiers and the top 15 women plu the six seeded qualifiers will bowl another 10 games from scratch in Stage 2 finals on September 22.

 

The top 6 men and top 6 women will advance to the stepladder grand finals. The men champion will earn 150 million Indonesian rupiah (approx. US$13,000) and the women champion 50 million rupiah (approx. US$4,400).
