Singaporean secures spot in finals

22nd February, Dubai: Singapore national bowler, Remy Ong improved with two impressive series of 705 and 730 to secure a spot in Round 2 finals of the 3rd Dubai International Bowling Tournament on Wednesday.  

Remy Ong, who had a superb qualifying start with 703 but managed only 678 and 647 in his two subsequent attempts yesterday to finish 23rd position. The Singaporean improved his lowest 3-game series with 705 at the 11.30am squad to make up some grounds.Although Ong made another attempt at 1.00pm squad, the 31-year-old southpaw could not make up further grounds. At the 4.30pm squad, Ong started off with a lowly 204 but bounched back strongly with 268 and 258 for a sizzling 730 series.

His improved 9-game tally of 2138 moved him up to 14th position and safely into Round 2 finals. With the final day of qualifying round remaining tomorrow, Ong will have another go at trying to break into the top 8 bracket so that he can earn a bye for Round 3 finals.

  Meanwhile, Benjamin Hong was slowly making further inroads and by the 8.00pm squad, Hong had amassed a 9-game total of 2058 putting him in 24th position, just two spots above the cut.

Kim Bolleby is the new leader after the 22-year-old Swede notched up a total of 2181. Thailand’s Yannaphon Larpapharat, who tied second spot with defending champion, Shaker Al Hassan of UAE at 2170 earlier, improved by four pins to firm up his second spot on 2175.Overnight leader, Mahmood Al Attar of UAE slipped back to third on 2171 followed by Shaker in fourth with 2170. Kuwait’s Basel Al Anzi took up fifth spot with 2168 ahead of two Emiratis, Hareb Al Mansoori and Mohamed Khalifa Al Qubaisi in sixth and seventh positions.

The eighth and final spot in the top 8 bracket went to early leader, Jordan Evan of Philippines with 2162.

February 23 will be the last day of qualifying for the Open division while the Youth Under-23 finals will be held at 3.00pm local time.
