Singapore bowlers need good showing

25th August, Bangkok: Singapore bowlers competiting at the World Men's Championship will need to step up their game in the next two events if they were to come home with a medal after dismal performances in the first two events.  It would be an ocassion when the Singapore bowlers would excel in the team event and the singles event when they start on Tuesday and Thursday. After lack luster performances in the doubles and trios, the team of Shaun Ng, Mark Wong and Remy Ong, Jason Yeong-Nathan and Lee Yu-Wen will be out to redeem themselves by excelling in the five-men team event.

Singapore took the the bronze medal in the trios event at the Asian Championship in Hong Kong and three bronze medals at the World Youth Championship in Orlando, USA, both in July.

But the Singaporeans have been far from impressive thus far in the championship in Bangkok, which began on Friday.

In the trios event over the last two days, Singapore failed to make the cut for the championship round when Shaun Ng, Mark Wong and Remy Ong finished 29th while Jason Yeong-Nathan and Lee Yu-Wen bowled with a pacer as Singapore only sent five bowlers to the championship.

At the last championship in Busan, Remy Ong came home with two gold medals winning the singles in record-breaking score as well as clinching the All Events gold in the process. Perhaps history will be repeated.

Meanwhile, the mighty Koreans overpowered both the Americans and their Asian counterpart, Japan to win their first gold medal in the Trios finals. Korea easily defeated Japan, 723-553 in the title match to win the gold medal.

The champions had earlier ousted USA 673-603 in the semi-finals to advance to the finals. Japan, who was seeded third, edged another American trio, 615-614 in the other semi for a place in the finals.
