Singapore adds a silver medal
24th January, Bangkok: Singapore women added a silver medal to their campaign at the 23rd Asian Tenpin Bowling Championships finishing second in the Women’s Team of 5 to Korea while Malaysia earned their second bronze medal iin third.
With only a slender margin of 17 pins from yesterday’s first block, Daphne Tan, Bernice Lim (alternated with Geraldine Ng in the second block), Jasmine Yeong-Nathan, Joey Yeo and New Hui Fen were left playing catch up after they stumbled to a poor start of 929 in the fourth game.
Korea’s Jung Da Wun, Jun Gwi Ae (alternating with Kim Jin Sun), Lee Young Seung, Jeon Eun Hee and Son Yun Hee were merciless when they downed a sizzling 1182 to overhaul Singapore and built up a massive 238 pins cushion.
Malaysia bowled much better with 1055 to overtake Indonesia for third spot. Although Singapore recovered slightly with 1014 in the fifth game, Korea still commanded a 170 pins gap.
Malaysia and Singapore were drawn together in the same pair of lanes for the sixth and final game. And when their neighbours began to string together several strikes, the mounting pressure was quite apparent.
However, the women prevailed to bring home a respectable 972 to claim the silver medal with 6259. Malaysia shot a superb 1076 to settle for the bronze medal with 6175, 84 pins behind Singapore.
Jung won her first individual gold medal after topping the All Events with 5328 to add a second gold to the Korean women and fourth for the country. Singles silver medalist, Misaki Mukotani of Japan won her second silver with 5299.
Doubles gold and Team bronze medalist, Sin Li Jane of Malaysia also won her second bronze medal after finishing third with 5220. Two Koreans, Jeon and New Hui Fen of Singapore had a chance to snatch a medal but stumbled in the final game of the team event to finish fourth and fifth.
Jasmine Yeong-Nathan finished seventh and Daphne Tan squeezed into the Masters in 16th position giving Singapore three finalists. Korea and Malaysia has five finalists each leaving two for Japan and a sole Indonesia.
