End of fine run for Singaporean

21st January, Doha: A fine run by Remy Ong came to an end as the Singaporean missed out of the Top 8 cutoff in the Stage 3 finals of the 7th Qatar International Bowling Championship finishing 10th on Monday.

Remy Ong, who staked his claim on the richest-ever Qatar Open title, finished second in Sunday's Stage 2 finals with 867, just 1 pin short of leader, Jason Belmonte of Australia. Ong had progresses into this stage after qualifying in 16th spot with 1346.The SEA Games two gold medalist had a superb 235 in his opening game but two back-to-back low games of 182 and 166 made his chances of making the top 8 cut off difficult. But Ong fought back galantly with 237 to total 820. Ong disappointingly missed the cut by just 16 pins finishing 10th.

Kirsten Penny of England edged Hong Kong's Wu Siu Hong, 236-226 and 243-234 to bag the US$50,000 champion's purse. Kirsten had earlier disposed off Malaysia's challenger, Shalin Zulkifli, 208-196 and 228-222 in the second semifinal match to reach the finals.

Wu ended Qatar's Mubarak Al-Muraikhi, 206-181 and 215-190 in the other semifinal before going down to the champion in the finals. Wu settled for second while Shalin finished third and Mubarak fourth.
