An improved performance by our girls

20th July, Orlando: Two-time national champion, Jazreel Tan partnered debutant, Amanda Ng to register an improved performance over their singles event to finished a creditable 11th in the Girl's Doubles event at the 10th World Youth Bowling Championships on Sunday. Both started with 383 followed with 427 but when Amanda shot 288 in the third game, Jazreel managed only 173 to give the pair a 461 team score and moving them up to fourth at the halfway mark.

But the duo rang out of steam towards the end and missed the top 4 cut to advance into the semi-finals. Germany's Tina Hulsch and Birgit Poppler, who finished fourth, defeated topseed, Sandra Gongora and Daniela Alvarado of Mexico, 442-389 to advance into the finals.

The Germans beat winner of the other semi-final match, Colombia, 464-393 to win the gold medal. Laura Fonnegra and Singles silver medalist, Rocio Restrpo settled for the silver medal despite ousting second-seed, Lee Hye-Mi and Lee Yeon-Ji of Korea, 418-413 in semi.   The other Singapore pair of Singles bronze medalist, Jasmine Yeong-Nathan and Singapore Open champion, Cherie Tan could not get into their strides to end in 20th position with 2422.

Jasmine Yeong-Nathan currently lies in ninth in the All Events standings after the singles and doubles with 2494. Rocio Restrpo leads with 2640 followed by Sandra Gongora and Indonesia's Tannya Roumimper in second snd third with 2596 and 2589 respectively.

The top 16 players in All Events after the conclusion of singles, doubles and team will advance to the Masters competition on Thursday.   Action at the World Youth Championships next shifts to Boy's Doubles action, which begins at 8.00am. Eastern on Monday. The girls will next bowl Tuesday in the first three games of the four-player team event.
