A near miss for Singaporean

22nd July, Kaohsiung: Singapore's Jennifer Tan missed the stepladder cut by just 17 pins finishing fourth in the Women's Singles Round-Robin finals of the World Games Kaohsiung 2009 while Remy Ong could only manage eighth in the men's division.  Jennifer Tan started off poorly in the opening game with 172 but rallied on to reel off 202, 214, 219, 191, 212, 196, 224 and 204 winning six matches and was fifth going into the position round match.

Despite posting 235, Tan lost the match to Malaysia's Zatil Iman and failing to earn the crucial 10 pins bonus that could have given her a third-place finish. Finland's Krista Pollanen beat third-placed Gye Min-Young to earn a place in the stepladder finals.

Zara Glover of Great Britain, who topped the field with 2219, lost to third-seed, Pollanen, 378-407 to settle for the silver while the Finn clinched the gold medal. The champion also edged second-seed, Liza Del Rosario of the Philippines, 215-210 to advance to the finals.

Meanwhile, Remy Ong did not get into his usual strides with 190 and 192 in his two opening matches in which he lost. Ong only managed to win five matches to end in eighth position with 2139.

Second-seed, anuel Otalora of Colombia took the gold medal after he outclassed topseed, Wu Siu Hong of Hong Kong, 445-367 in the finals. The Colombian edged Wu, 190-188 and trashed his opponent, 255-179 to earn the victory.

The 28-year-old champion also edged third-seed, Adrian Ang of Malaysia, 184-181 in the semifinals to advance into the title match against the topseed.

Colombia ended the tenpin bowling event of the World Games as overall champion with 1 gold and 1 silver. Korea and Finland tied for second with 1 gold medal each. The next World Games in 2013 will be hosted by Colombia.
