Tough day for Singapore bowlers

28th July, Las Vegas: It was a tough day for Singapore bowlers competing in the World Women's Championship 2009 at the Cashman Center as all six representatives failed to finish in the top 10 of the opening Singles event.  Last year's Singapore Open champion, Cherie Tan was our best performer but only managed to finish 20th position as American PBA pro, Stefanie Nation topped the event to move into the stepladder finals.

Cherie Tan downed lines of 194, 193, 232, 216, 235 and 215 for a respectable 1285 and an average of 214.17 but the standard at this championship being at such a high level, Tan's score was only good enough for 20th position out of 228 participants.

In the opening Squad 1, Bernice Lim posted 1210 for 19th position with Singapore's most hopeful contestant, Jasmine Yeong-Nathan only managing 28th with 1185. Bernice tied 66th place and Jasmine ended up 100th overall.

Bowling in the same squad with Cherie in Squad 2, Geraldine Ng shot 1231 to take up 22nd in the squad and 53rd position overall. In the third and final squad, Jazreel Tan posted 1219 for 16th in the squad while Shayna Ng took 26th position with 1204.

Stefanie Nation of USA claimed topseed to advance into the stepladder semifinals where she will face Finland's Krista Pollanen while second-seed, Sandra Gongora of Mexico will meet Anja Ginge Jensen of Denmark in the other semi.

The winner will meet in the title match over 1 game to determine the first gold medal of the championship which will be staged on Thusrday after the Trios first block. The bowlers will resume with their Doubles event over three squads on Wednesday.
