Team Singapore in the hunt

28th August, Henderson, USA: Singapore is in the hunt for their first medal after finishing a respectable sixth position in the first block of the Women’s 5-player Team event at the World Championships 2013 on Tuesday.

Reigning World Cup champion, Shayna Ng led team-mates, New Hui-Fen, Daphne Tan, Bernice Lim and anchored by Jazreel Tan did well in their opening game with 1029 to take up third behind pace-setters Korea and Canada.

Singapore slipped down to fifth after they managed 980 in the second game while Korea stretched their lead over Canada from 91 to 108 pins with Venezuela and Malaysia moving up to third and fourth positions.

Korea ended the first block with 959 which was enough to remain in the lead with 3156 as Venezuela made a late charge to snatch second spot with 3089. Malaysia also ended strongly to take up third with 3041.

Canada settled for fourth with 3029 while Singapore recovered with 1001 to finish sixth with 3010 behind Sweden in fifth with 3019. Singapore is only 29 pins from fourth-placed Canada and 31 pins off third-paced Malaysia.

 

Bernice hauled herself up into a medal contention after she took up second spot in the Womens All Events standings with 4570, just 7 pins off two gold medalist, Ryu Seo-Yeon of Korea. Jazreel in in 23rd position with 4369 and could make the Masters finals.

Shayna, Hui-Fen, Daphne and Cherie Tan occupied 34th, 43rd, 63rd and 68th positions respectively.

Meanwhile, Singapore men completed the first block in a lowly 16th position with 3027, 260 pins off the leader, Venezuela with 3287. Asian Indoor & Martial Arts Games Team gold medalist, Hong Kong settled for second with 3266 after leading the firt two games.

Denmark and Korea took up third and fourth positions with 3220 and 3206 while Malaysia and USA are still in the hunt for the top 4 positions after finishing fifth and sixth positions respectively.

No Singapore men are in the top 24 of the All Events standings. The best performer was Muhd Jaris Goh in 107th position followed by Keith Saw in 133rd, Ng Tiac Pin in 135th, Joel Tan in 144th, Javier Tan in 174th and Ng Chiew Pang in 176th.

Singles gold medalist, Chris Barnes of USA topped the table with 4939, 241 pins ahead of Martin Larsen of Sweden in second with 4698. Korea’s Cho Young-Seon is third with 4679.

 

The women and men will resume with their second block of the 5-player team event on August 29 and the top 4 teams will advance to the one-match knockout semi-finals and final.
