Stronger team for Asian Championships

16th January, Bangkok: Team Singapore competing at the 23rd Asian Tenpin Bowling Championships looks much stronger as they took to the lanes at Blu-O Rythmn & Bowl Rachayothin for their official practice on Friday.

2014 Asian Games Inchoen Team gold medalist, Daphne Tan, New Hui Fen and Joey Yeo will provide a strong women team together with reigning National champion and 2008 AMF World Cup champion, Jasmine Yeong-Nathan and 2010 Asian Games Guangzhou Trios gold medalist, Geraldine Ng.

2014 Indonesia Open champion, Bernice Lim will provide the perfect experience and the much needed support especially after her triumph at the 2011 Asian Championships winning the Doubles gold medal with Daphne.

Although the Korean women is the team to beat, Singapore is not discounting Japan, Malaysia and Indonesia. Daphne and Joey are drawn in the opening squad for the Singles event scheduled for January 18.

Bernice and Hui Fen will pair up in the second squad while Geraldine and Jasmine makes up the remaining pair also in the second squad.

Singapore’s men team are made up of Justin Lim, Keith Saw, Muhd Jaris Goh, Ng Chiew Pang, Brandan Tan and Joel Tan. Keith will provide the experience he had gained at the last championship winning the Singles gold medal in 2012 in Hong Kong.

Essentially, the men team with the exception of Brandan Tan replacing Javier Tan, the team had participated at the 2014 Asian Games and returned empty handed. The experience gained then will surely play an important role in their quest for glory here in Bangkok.

Based on the recent form of Joel Tan, who rolled four perfect games en-route to capturing the coveted MILO Junior All-Stars title, the 19-year-old is ideal to anchor the team during the 5-player team event.

Justin and Keith are drawn in the opening Men’s Singles Squad A on January 17 while Muhd Jaris and Ng will pair up in Squad B. Brandan and Joel are drawn in the the third and final squad.

Again the mighty Koreans look unbeatable but as the saying goes – “anything can happen in bowling”. Other players from Japan, Malaysia, Indonesia, Hong Kong and UAE are also fancied to win medals at this year’s championship.

125 men, 76 women and 70 team officials from 22 member countries of the Asian Bowling Federation will contest five events – Singles, Doubles, Trios, 5-player Team event and Masters finals over the next 10 days.

The Doubles event will be held on January 19 and 20 while the Trios will be contested over two blocks of three games on January 21 and 22. The 5-player Team event will also be played over two blocks of three games on January 23 and 24.

The top 16 men and top 16 women based on the All Events standings (24 games) will qualify for the Masters Round-robin Match-play finals to be held over two blocks of 8 games on January 25 and 26.

The top 3 men and top 3 women at the end of the second block will proceed to the stepladder grand finals. 12 gold medals are at stake in this year’s competition.
