SingaporeBowling wins two Sports Awards
19th April, Singapore: National co-head coach, William Woo and national bowler, New Hui Fen were crowned Singapore Coach of the Year and Sports Girl of the Year by the Singapore National Olympic Council.
Woo, who won the same award in 1996, has been instrumental to brining success to our achievements at the Guangzhou Asian Games in which bowling contributed five medals for the nation in November 2010.
His eye for talent and his recommendation to the selection committee for picking the right bowlers such as New Hui Fen, Cherie Tan and Shayna Ng for major events has contributed to winning this award.
“It feels awesome and great to win this award. This definitely is recognition for the hard work and successes not only of me but for the whole coaching staff of SIngaporeBowling and the players,” said Woo.
The Sports Girl Award is national bowler, New Hui Fen's first major award. Hui Fen won a bronze medal in the Women's Singles in her debut at the Guangzhou Asian Games in addition to winning the Doubles and Team gold medals at the 2011 Asian Championship in Abu Dhabi.
But the 19-year-old shot into the limelight after bagging the two gold and two silver medals at the inaugural Asian Youth Games in Singapore, including the Singles and Doubles gold medals.
Hui Fen was also appointed Ambassador for bowling for the SNOC Starhub Partnership Programme last year.
“I'm happy and surprised to hear that I've won the Sports Girl of the Year award. It has shown my hard work is in the right direction,” said Hui Fen.
“Winning this award after last year's Asian Games makes it extra special. I must thank my parents for their support to allow me to defer my studies to train and eventually selected to represent Singapore in the Asian Games. I also want to thank my coaches for their believe in me.”
Apart from these two major awards, Singapore also won the following meritorious awards:
· Bernice Lim - Meritorious Award (Individual Junior)
· Remy Ong - Meritorious Award (Individual)
· Cherie Tan - Meritorious Award (Individual)
· Bernice Lim and New Hui Fen (Girl's Doubles) - Meritorious Award (Event Junior)
· Cherie Tan, Geraldine Ng and Shayna Ng (Women's Trios) - Meritorious Award (Event)
· Remy Ong and Jason Yeong-Nathan (Men's Doubles) - Meritorious Award (Event)
Congratulations to Coach William and our bowlers for their achievements!
