Singaporeans making steady progress

16th January, Doha: Singapore national bowlers competing in the 7th Qatar International Open Bowling Championship were making steady progress as Remy Ong and Shaun Ng finished in the top 36 of the qualifying table.  SEA Games two gold medalist, Remy Ong in his first 2008 international outing showed the way with a commendable performance reeling off 221, 258, 214, 229, 201 and 190 to record 1313. Ong finished second in Squad 10 two days ago to take up 14th overall.

Ong's teammate and SEA Games Trios gold medalist, Shaun Ng Qenn made steady progress from an earlier score of 1183 by improving with 1251 from lines of 168, 188, 232, 243, 212 and 208 to finish 31st and in the top 36.

Mark Wong's earlier attempt of 1138 was also bettered with a 1217 in Squad 16 to take up 38th position, just two spots of the Top 36 qualifying cut off. Jason Yeong-Nathan has yet to get off the mark managing only 1156.

Meanwhile, Naif Oqab of UAE topped the table with a superb 1419 in Squad 14 followed by Korea's Choi Bok Eum in second with 1411. USA's Tim Mack did well to take up third spot with 1379 followed by Mansoor Al-Awamy of Qatar in fourth spot with 1353.

The best female competing against the men was Malaysia's Zatil Iman, who posted 1346 (with a handicap of 48 pins) for fifth spot as Sweden's Martin Larsen, Qatar's Saeed Al-Hajri, Malaysia's Adrian Ang, Qatar's Mubarak Al-Muraikhi and Waheed Al-Abdulla competed the top 10.

The Top 36 at the end of the qualifying rounds till January 19, will make the cut for the finals scheduled for January 20 and 21.
