Singaporeans denied victories

25th June, Manila: National youths, Gina Lim and Ng Chiew Pang were denied victories in the Classified and Youth divisions of the 13th PBAP Bevida-Storm International Classic which concluded on Friday.  Gina Lim lost to eventual champion RJ San Diego, 144-184 in the title match of the Classified finals to settle for first runner-up while Ng also finished first runner-up in the Youth finals.

Gina Lim, who finished third in the earlier 8-game Classified division semi-finals with 1729, edged No. 2 seed, Hamilton Hernando of the Philippines and winner of the first match, Chen Hung-Chih of Chinese Taipei, 192-190-184 in the second match to advance to the finals.

Three unlucky splits in the final against top seed, RJ San Diego of the Philippines costed Gina the chance to take the title going down, 144-184 to settle for the first runner-up position.

Reigning national champion, Fok Ka Wai was unlucky too when she missed the cut for the stepladder finals finishing ninth with 1635 as Tan Yan Ling ended in 13th position. In the youth division, Ng Chiew Pang was also unlucky not to land his first international title after he finished a galant second to Korea’s Kim Sung-Jun. Ng started off with 259 then followed it up with 222, 244, 258 and 208 in his next four games.

But a lowly 166 put Ng further away from the front-running Kim. Despite ending with 203 and 191, the Singaporean lost to Kim by just 29 pins on a total of 1751. Kim totaled 1780 for a well-deserved victory.

Other Singapore youths in the finals were Gregory Gan who tied seventh position with Taiwan’s Li Min-Jhe on 1671, Brandon Lee 11th with 1619 and Justin Lim 12th with 1604.

Gina Lim won 80,000 peso (approx. S$2,300) to the champion’s 150,000 peso. Ng Chiew Pang took home 10,000 peso (approx. S$300) in the youth division.
