Singaporean World Cup debutant goes top

29th November, Wroclaw, Poland: World Cup debutant, Shayna Ng, 24 took over the lead of the 48th QubicaAMF Bowling World Cup today amassing a total of 4659 after four blocks of five games, 99 pins ahead of England’s Kirsten Penny.   Despite a slow start from Shayna in the first block with 1087, the Singaporean debuted in 6th position as defending champion and two-time AMF World Cup winner, Aumi Guerra of Domincan Republic topping the women’s division with 1201.

Shayna rallied on in the second block with 1215 for a 10 game total of 2302 to move up to third with the Dominican remaining in the lead with 2344 after rolling 1143 in her second block effort.

The Singaporean then fired an amazing 1249 series in the third block to take over the running with 3552 as Guerra managed only 1058 to slip to third with 3402 while England’s Kirsten Penny moved up to second.

Shayna ended the fourth and final qualifying block with 1108 for a grand total of 4659 while Guerra posted an identical 1108 and failed to overhaul Shayna to settle for third with 4510. Penny hund on to second spot with 4560, 99 pins adrift.

Shayna already has international medals having won gold in the team event of the SEA championships in 2011 and silver and bronze in the Asian Games. In 2011 her six game total in the qualifying for the singles of the world championships was a record 1601.

The top 24 women made the cut for the next round for another five games and Blanka Hanusikova of Czech Republic survived the cut in 24th position with 3913 (average 195.65) while Joanna Merklejn did not progress finishing 58th position.

Meanwhile Keith Saw of Singapore ended his debut disappointingly with a 20-game total 4003 (average 200.15) for 42nd position. The 18-year-old started off poorly with 1012 but did improve to 24th position after the seond block.

But two uninspiring 958 and 952 in his next two blocks dropped Keith into 42nd position and miss the cut. Multiple 2012 World Youth Championship gold medalist, Marshall Kent of USA topped the men’s division with 4667.

This year’s GCC Championship Masters gold medalist and another deutant, Hareb Al-Mansoori of UAE finished well in second position with 4576 while last year’s second runner-up, Mykhaylo Kalika of Ukraine took third spot with 4551.

Sergey Andreev of Russia survived the cut in 24th position with 4177 (average 208.25) while Poland’s representative, Pawel Bielski failed to progress finishing 34th position. The top 24 men will advance into the next round for another 5 games before cutting down to top 8 for the round-robin finals.
