Singaporean wins bronze

26th June, Bangkok: Top seed, Basil Low of Singapore earned the Boy’s Singles bronze medal at the 12th World Youth Championships 2012 after being eliminated in the semi-finals by eventual champion, Marshall Kent of USA.

The Amercian, who squeezed into the fourth and final spot of the semi-finals the day before, denied the Singapore with a 196-188 victory. Kent went on to beat Japan’s Shusaku Asato, 226-197 to win the gold.

“I was a bit nervous in the match against the American,” said Low. “And when I did settle down, I just could not roll a double strike. But I’m still pleased with my performance so far.

“I was also surprised that I broke the record during the qualifying rounds. It is important to score well especially when the scores will be carried down to the Masters finals. I hope I can maintain my momemtum toward the two other events.”

Singapore so far own three world records. Remy Ong still holds the 6-game record for the men at the 2006 Busan Asian Games. Shayna Ng holds the 6-game record for the women with 1601 and now Low claimed the boy’s record.

Meanwhile, Korea won their first gold medal after Kim Seon-Jeong outclassed top seed, Hee Kar Yen og Malaysia, 228-169 in the championship match. KIm sailed past No. 3 seed, Julian Franco of Colombia, 203-146 in the second semi-final match earlier.The Malaysian also flew past fourth-seed, Cristina Rodriguez of Puerto Rico, 225-151 in the first semi but could not carry her form into the final.

Singapore’s best performer in the girl’s division was Ilma Nur Jannah, who finished seventh with 1344, 16 pins off the cut. New Hui Fen took 14th place with 1206 with Krishna Darshini and Bernice Lim in 32nd and 36th positions respectively.

COmpetition will shift to the doubles event with the two girls squads playing immediately after the medal presentation of the Singles. The boys will contest their doubles event with three squads on June 27 and the last squad on June 28.

The top 4 finishers will again advance into the shootout fsemi-finals and finals to determine the champions.
