Singapore lass misses podium

26th January, Kuwait: Bernice Lim of Singapore missed the podium after finishing fourth in the opening Girl’s Singles event of the 15th Asian Youth Tenpin Bowling Championship as Baek Seung Ja underlined Korea’s supremacy to win the gold medal. Bernice Lim had a great start by rolling 243 in her opening game to take up third behind Korea’s Baek Seung Ja, who almost shot the championship’s first perfect game with 299 and China’s Sun Hong Dou second.

Lim, who just turned 19 last December continued to impress with 225 and 247 in the next two games but slipped to fourth as Rina Asada of Japan fired the first perfect 300 in the second and 240 in the third to trail the Korean.

But as the lane worn down a little, Lim’s adjustment came late and managed only to shoot 212 in the fourth game with Baek and another Japanese, Misaki Mukotani firing massive games to pull away from Lim.   Despite ending strongly with 224 and 258, Lim’s charge was a little too late as Masaki stormed home with 278 and 267 in her last two games to snatch the silver medal with 1489. Baek gave Korea’s first gold with 1552.

Rina Asada slipped down to third to take home the bronze medal with 1469 while Lim saw her medal hope dashed and had to settle for fourth with 1410. “I had a good start in the first half but the lanes broke down a little in the fourth and although I was hitting the pocket, it didn’t have the carry,” said the slightly disappointed Bernice Lim.

“We brought rookies here for the championship except for Bernice, who is more experience and she did well but just didn’t have enough carry to fire big games,” said national head coach, William Woo. “Although we made some adjustments, the lanes reacted a little bit different and Bernice had a tough time playing catchup.”

Asian Youth Games Doubles gold medalist, Krishna Darshini finished 13th position with 1279 averaging 213.17. Southpaw, Gina Lim took up 20th spot with 1177 while Asian Youth Games two gold medalist, New Hui Fen ended a disappointing 22nd with 1140.   The boys will take to the lanes on Wednesday morning for the Singles Squad A while Squad B will be contested in the afternoon. The combined scores will determine the winners.
