Singapore draws blank on second day

23rd May, Hong Kong: Singaporeans drew blanks on the second day of the 11th Asian Schools Tenpin Bowling Championship Doubles event as Japan won their second gold medal in the boy's division and Korea won their first in the girl's event. Boy's Singles bronze medalist, Paul Yap posted 1273 with his partner shooting 1186 to give the Singaporean pair a total of 2469, 286 pins off third-placed Daisuke Yoshida and Takahito Fukuda of Japan.

Malaysia's Muhd Amirrul Afif, who shot the tournament's first perfect game, failed to win a medal and finishing fourth despite knocking down a record-breaking opening game of 587 with Bng Kihow.

Hiroki Takada and Shusaku Asato clinched the Boy's Doubles gold, a second for Japan by posting a total of 2761. Kuwait's Dhari Al-Bishi and Ali Salem stormed home to snatch the silver medal with 2747.   Singapore's three other pairs, Ng Chiew Pang-Jin Lau (15th-2414), Anthony Wee Wei Yang-Keith Saw Hui Xun (17th-2393) and Alexander Tan Kee Hock-Shawn Loh Chee Choong (26th-2210) put in a below-par performances.

Paul Yap's 12-game total after two events put him in 10th position in the All-Events standings and look good for a spot in the top 16 Masters finals. The nearest to have any chance of making the finals is Jin Lau, 132 pins off 16th-placed. Meanwhile, Celine Mok Wen Jun and Edlyn Kwok You Jing, who were fourth before the final game, dropped to sixth after a poor game of 399 in the last game. The Singaporean pair totaled 2472, 65 pins from third.

Singles silver and bronze medalists, Kim Ji Yeon (B) and Sim Ui Jin teamed up to win Korea's first gold medal with 2756. Philippines' Kimberly Lao and Dyan Coronacion clinched the silver with 2657.

The other first team's pair of Kim Yeo Jin and Kim Ji Yeon (A) snatched the bronze medal with 2582 from Japan's Haruna Nojima and Singles Gold medalist, Misaki Mukotani, who settled for fourth with 2557.   Other Singapore girls all failed to make any impression with Grace Tan Liwei-Michelle Ng (15th), Grace Fung Yu Si-Genevieve Gan Hui Ling (18th) and Joelie Fung Yu Hui-Rachel Ang Xue Ying (20th) finishing in the bottom half.

Edlyn Kwok and Celine Mok occupied 9th and 15th position in the Girl's All Events standings as Masaki Mukotani topped the table with 2844. Doubles gold medalist, Kim Ji Yeon (B) and Sim Ui Jin of Korea are second and third.

Competition will resume with the Team of Four tomorrow over played two blocks of 3 games each. The top 16 boys and top 16 girls based on the 24-game total in the All Events, will qualify for the Round-Robin Masters finals on Monday and Tuesday.
