Ng maintains lead

5th August, Citrus Addison, Illinois: Shayna Ng of Singapore maintained her lead in the 2016 US WOmen’s Open after the first eight games match-play rounds with a total of 8523 pinfall at The Stardust Bowl on Friday.

Ng, who started the day in fifth position and 173 pins adrift, won 7-1 in the match-play round (30 bonus for a win and 15 bonus for a draw), to build an 85-pin lead over Colombia native Rocio Restrepo. Jodi Woessner of Oregon, Ohio was third with 8,332.

Ng’s team-mates, New Hui Fen and Jazreel Tan impressed by finishing fourth and fifth positions with 8300 and 8294 respectively.

After the final eight games of qualifying, New led with high block of 1728 on a total of 6700 to lead Restrepo by 108 pins into the match-play round. New said she got luck with a ball choice, saying she just took a “big shinny ball out of the bag” and wetn with it.

“It’s tough because every day is different, even on the fresh,” New said. “You have to play around with your release a lot, and speed control is really important. I think people with more ball speed tend to do well here. But, I guess things worked out today.”

Ng took fifth position with 6527 and Tan eighth with 6468. Indonesia’ Tannya Roumimper, who finished third in the qualifying round, ended in ninth position with 8213. Cherie Tan missed the cut after the third qualifying round in 49th position.

The 2016 U.S. Women’s Open continues Saturday with the final two eight-game blocks of round-robin match play to determine the five finalists for Sunday’s stepladder, which will be televised live on CBS Sports Network at noon Eastern.

Competitors will bowl 24 qualifying games over three days before the field is cut to the top one-third. Following another eight qualifying games, the field will be reduced to the top 24 for match play.

The top five competitors, based on their 56-game totals at the end of match play, will advance to the stepladder finals.
