Last pair off the pace

14th August, Munich: Hopes on the last pair of Remy Ong and Basil Low doing well in Squad 5 of the Singles event came to naught at the World Men's Championships 2010 at Dream Bowl Palace on Saturday. Remy Ong and Basil Low ended any hopes of Singapore getting anything from the Singles event when Ong finished a dismal 65th position in the final squad and 310th out of 356 men with 1036 while Basil Low shot 996 to finish 71st position.

On Friday and in the first squad, Mark Wong and Ng Tiac Pin posted 1150 and 1127 to end up 159th and 193rd overall respectively. Justin Lim and Jason Yeong-Nathan shot 1178 and 1142 to take up 108th and 172nd positions.

The top four finishers in Squad 4 took away the top four overnight finishers. Dominic Barrett of England topped Squad 4 and finished as top seed for the shootout. Choi Bok-Eum of Korea took second spot ahead of two Americans, Chris Barnes and Bill O'Neill in third and fourth.   O'Neill edged top seed, Barrett 187-170 in the first semi-final to advance into the finals while Choi defeated Barnes, 217-191 to face another American in the final match. O'Neil outshone the Korean to win USA's first gold medal with a 244-202 victory.

Choi settled for the silver medal while Barrett and Barnes took a bronze medal each. Ms Jessie Phua, FIQ and SBF President presented the silver and gold medals to the winners.

Mr Addie Ophelder, FIQ secretary general and ETBF President gave away the medals to the joint bronze medalists. Competition will resume on Sunday with Ng Tiac Pin and Justin Lim pairing in Squad 1.
