Dynamic duo wins gold

22nd February, K.Lumpur: The dynamic duo of Shayna Ng and Geraldine Ng of Singapore bounced back with a victory in the Women's Doubles event at the V Commonwealth Tenpin Bowling Championship on Tuesday.Geraldine Ng and Shayna Ng had a superb start in their opening game with a 435 effort but had to settle for second after England's Hayley White and Nicki Ainge posted a splendid 523 for the lead.

As the English pair continued their relentless pace with 430 and 405 in the next two games, the Singapore duo had to be contented with second with a gap of 179 pins separating the two pairs.

Shayna and Geraldine were able to reduce the gap down to 42 pins after firing 430 and 472 in the next two games when the England managed 328 and 437 giving themselves a glimsp of hope for the gold.

With sheer determination, Singapore downed a sizzling 463 to snatch the gold medal with 2544 in which Shayna posted a 6-game series of 1262 while Geraldine brought home 1282.

"The silver medal in the singles was great, but as Asian gold medallists the expectations were high on us," said Shayna Ng. "But we're glad that we made amends to win the doubles gold today.

"It was a difficult game out there and we had to bring out our best. We're glad that we managed to beat the English pair in the final game, otherwise we would have had to settle for another silver. It was a great competition today and we're glad that we stood up to the challenge for the victory."

White and Ainge settled for the silver medal with 2509 while Singles gold medalist, Siti Safiyah Amirah and bronze medalist, Zandra Aziela totaled 2484 to take home the bronze medal.

Meanwhile, Singapore's pair of Jason Yeong-Nathan and Remy Ong missed the podium after finishing a distant fourth with 2414, 179 pins adrift Malaysia's Adrian Ang and Singles gold medalist, Zulmazran Zulkifli of Malaysia, who took the bronze medal.

England's Matt Miller and Matt Chamberlain, who were third going into the final game, won the gold medal with 2611 after the duo fired a winning game of 482.

Debutant, Chris Castle and Euro-Med Storm International Masters Challenge runner-up, George Frilingos of Australia, who led by 70 pins before the final game, threw away a golden opportunity to win the gold after they managed a poor 384 to settle for the silver with 2589.

 

"It was a close battle out there and we were lucky that everything fell in place for us in the final game," said Miller, who shot a 269 game in his final game to help England win the gold.

"I had actually struggled in my earlier games but the lanes were good to me in the final game," added the 2010 AMF World Cup runner-up, Miller. "We just hit it off in the final, while Australia had some problems. We can consider ourselves lucky. But it is great feeling to have won the gold medal," said Chamberlain.

Geraldine and Shayna is poised for more glory after by occupying third and fourth positions in the All Events, 55 and 61 pins behind leader, Siti Safiyah Amirah of Malaysia, topped the standing with 2559.

Jason and Remy is off the pace in 14th and 17th positions in the men's standings but are 26 and 47 pins off 12th position for a chance to make the Masters finals.

Competition will resume with the Mixed Doubles split into two squads tomorrow and a chance for the men to redeem themselves if they can win a medal.
