A much better showing from Singaporeans

16th August, Munich: Singapore's Jason Yeong-Nathan and Remy Ong turned in a much better performance in Squad 4 of the World Men's Championships 2010 Doubles event albeit missing the cut for the knockout stage.  Instead of a poor start as in previous events, Jason Yeong-Nathan and Remy Ong got off to a cracking opening game of 465 to take up second behind UAE's Sayed Ibrahim Al-Hashimi and Hussain Al-Suwaidi.

UAE held on to the lead after the second game but saw their lead reduced from 26 to 10 pins as Singapore shot 396 and UAE 380 while Germany's Bodo Konieczny and Jens Nickel started to make their bid following the leaders.

A superb 455 from the Germans saw them surging into the lead as both UAE and Singapore dropped their pace in the fourth game allowing Russia and Hong Kong to move ahead of them.

Germany ended the squad with 2514 to top the squad and crucially snatched third spot overall. Hong Kong finished second in the squad with 2484 and Singapore took third spot with 2458.

"The lane conditions are extremely challenging but it was much better today," said Remy Ong, who posted a 6-game series of 1281 and Yeong-Nathan 1177. "It took us two days to get over the how we should tackle the lanes and I'm confident that from now on, we'll do even better."Ong and Yeong-Nathan finished 11th overall and Singapore's best pair. Ng Tiac Pin-Justin Lim shot 2368 in Squad 1 and Basil Low-Mark Wong managed 2263.

Sweden's Martin Paulsson and Mathais Arup remained in pole with 2621 followed by Malaysia's Muhamad Nur Aiman and Alex Liew in second with 2568. Konieczny and Nickel finished third with 2514m 1 pin ahead of USA's Patrick Allen and Rhino Page in fourth.

Singles gold and bronze medalist and leader of Squad 3, slipped down to fifth and out of the shootout finals. The final squad will take place later and the top four will earn their chance of winning the second gold medal.
