Singapore off to a fabulous start
1st December, Johannesburg: SEA Games multiple gold medalist, Cherie Tan of Singapore got off to a fabulous start in 47th QubicaAMF Bowling World Cup after finishing the first block of the opening squad to tie second position with Diandra Asbaty of USA behind reigning champion, Aumi Guerra of the Dominican Republic. Finland's Krista Pollanen, reigning champion Aumi Guerra of Dominican Republic and America's Diandra Asbaty traded the lead in the early stages of the first block of 5 games while Singapore's representative, Cherie Tan kept close with the leaders with 219, 215 and 258 in her first three games.
Cherie, who was the star of the SEA Games in Jakarta last month, became the first Singaporean to capture a medal in each of the five events contested and coming home with 3 gold and 2 silver medals.
The Singaporean shot a superb 244 in her fourth game to move into the lead, 29 pins ahead of the American while third was Guerra, a further 9 pins away.
But the Singaporean struggled in the fifth and final game with 158 to tie second spot with Asbaty on 1094. Guerra, who was the most consistent of all, ended with 247 to regain top spot with 1145.
"Cherie had a terrific first four games and she was making all the right adjustments along the way to score well," said heach coach, William Woo.
"In the fifth and final game, she also made similar adjustments to get the carry but somehow her shots were hitting the head pin too high and she got three splits resulting in a low game. We know what we need to do for the next three blocks should the same situation arises."
Netherlands' Wendy Kok finished fourth with 1087 ahead of early pace-setter, Pollanen completing the top 5 of Squad 1.
Squad 1 will resume with their second block of 5 games tomorrow in the final squad of the day after Squad 2 contest theirs in the afternoon. Squad 2 will bowl their first block later after lane maintenance.
Singapore's men representative is Alexander Tan making his debut and will bowl his first block later this afternoon.
