Singapore bounches back in Team of 5

9th September, Hong Kong: After a lackluster performance in the Trios event the past two days, Team Singapore bounced back in the 5-player Team event of World Women Championship 2011 to finish second in the first block on Friday.

Daphne Tan, Geraldine Ng and Cherie Tan teamed up in the Trios event to finish the event yesterday in 30th position with 1842, 267 pins off the pace of leader Korea. The second pair of New Hui Fenm Shayna Ng and Jazreel Tan fair worse with 1728 to finish 42nd position.

After a great start with Shayna Ng winning the bronze medal after a record-breaking 6-games score of 1601 in the qualifying rounds to make the semi-finals only to lose to fourth-seed, Jacqueline Ng of Malaysia.

Hui Fen and Jazreel also turned in another superb performance to finish third in the Doubles qualifying round to advance to the semi-finals and despite beating second-seed Denmark, 454-391 in the semi-final, Singapore settled for the silver after losing to eventual champion, United States.

The Singapore national bowlers relished on the long oil pattern today to finish in a strong position before resuming the second block of three games over the shorter medium oil pattern tomorrow. If they can maintain their momentum and keep a good pace to make the top 4 cut and advance into the semi-finals, Team Singapore may bag their first elusive gold medal of the World Women Championship 2011.

"We started off pretty well on the first and second game but on the third, we missed the transition of the lanes a little bit and didn't make the adjustments quicker enough," said Jazreel Tan.

"Some of us are good on this condition and they carried the others in this block. And we've players who will be strong on the medium oil pattern and hopefully, they will push us through in the second block."

Denmark snatched pole with 3419 after a strong 1140 third game, 42 pins ahead of Singapore. Korea stormed home with 1157 to take third spot with 3372 followed by Germany in fourth with 3368.

Meanwhile, rookie Daphne Tan is the top Singapore finisher in the All Events standings after 21 games from four events and in ninth position with 4806. Singapore bronze medalist, Shayna Ng recovered to take up 12th with 4788 and Jazreel in 14th position with 4748.

Hui Fen and Geraldine Ng is 30th and 31st with 4632 and 4631, 83 pins off the cut at 16th position while the lanes conditions hardly favoured the left-handers with Cherie Tan in 53rd position.
